An Orphan
a. A child whose parents are dead.
b. A child who has been deprived of parental care and has not been adopted.
Often it is assumed that only children whose parents are dead qualify as orphans. However a closer study shows that there are two categories: true orphans and social orphans. A true orphan is a child with no parents or extended family to care for them. Social orphans come from families where the child cannot be cared for because of incarceration, extreme poverty, physical abuse, and abandonment. – source: WIKIPEDIA
In both cases these children are in very desperate situations.
